Business Intelligence & Data Warehousing

Complete and timely information is critical for effective decision making. Business Intelligence is the process of getting the right information in an expeditious and usable manner, the analysis of which can have a positive impact on the organisation’s business strategy or operations. Business Intelligence can also recognize business patterns and make them noticeable.

Business Intelligence enables introspection - this means tracking actual business performance with respect to business strategy and identifying areas for corrective and preventive measures, like deadlines missed, recurring fluctuations in sales, sales promotion impacts, margin analysis, etc.

Business Intelligence applications include Budgeting & Forecasting, Customer Profiling, Logistics Management, Accounting, Margin Analysis, Performance Monitoring, Resource Management, Strategic Planning, Supply chain, etc.

Business Intelligence is the application of data, information and knowledge originating from both inside and outside the organisation and is achieved by data gathering and analysis. Data gathering is achieved using Data Warehousing methodologies and data analysis is performed by specialized OLAP tools like Nuva’s iWITNESS.

Data Warehousing
Data Warehousing

The Data Warehouse consists of stored data, which is extracted from production databases and conventional files. It is a managed database in which data is

  • Subject oriented
  • Integrated
  • Time variant
  • Non volatile

The main purpose of Data Warehousing is to build a database for Decision Support which is different from operational/transactional (OLTP) databases. Analytical data is different from transactional data in terms of both requirements and users. Generally, transactional databases are not designed for query or analysis purposes. Further transactional databases do not store historic data. Multiple transactional databases used by an organisation may use different units of measurement for the same attributes.

The steps involved in creating a data warehouse are generally referred to as ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Loading). This process will populate a data warehouse with transformed data from different production databases and conventional files. ETL tools also establish the meta data where information about the data in a warehouse is stored. Access products are used on top of this database by end users for the purpose of multi dimensional analysis and a variety of statistical analysis and data visualisation.

Data Warehousing requires many technology components, which must work well together. Data from operational systems and other external systems are periodically extracted and transformed by data warehouse tools and loaded into a data warehouse. The data warehouse is managed through the use of data management tools. The data warehouse is accessed via data access tools.

The advantages of Data Warehouse could be many and its benefits could vary from Business-to-Business. In general, the benefits are :

  • Better quality data
  • Fast access for analysis leading to better decisions
  • Ease of use and improved data availability
  • Access to data without programmer intervention
  • Information for competitive advantage
  • Platform independance
  • Quantitative values and metrics for analysis

OLAP tools

OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) tools enable users to explore and analyse data the way they want. Users, for instance, can view sales figures per region by salesperson, on-time delivery of products per region by product-type and so on. Exception reporting highlights the best or worst performing products or individual profit centers. Drill-down features of certain OLAP tools, facilitates users to determine the reason behind such performance figures, down to the lowest detail, such as a particular invoice or transaction.
